Last night I presented The Luxury of Contemplation: Why we owe ourselves time to reflect on our work at Refresh the Triangle.

The talk is about how my work with Take Two IMLS grant has afforded me a luxury to spend time understanding my work that I won’t soon give up, no matter what work I’m doing or who’s funding it.  In the talk, I outline the patterns I use when reflecting on my work:

  • Ask a Question
  • Identify (re)Sources
  • Have Good Tools
  • Play to Your Strengths
  • Share Your Work
  • Keep Going

And encourage others to ask themselves three questions, once posed by Richard Hamming at his 1986 talk, You and Your Research:

  1. What are the biggest problems in your field?
  2. Are you working on one of them?
  3. Why not?
